CMarZ Steering Group member, Peter's research interests are the quantitative population ecology of zooplankton with emphasis on zooplankton small-scale distribution and abundance; organic matter transport into the deep-sea; the biology of Gulf Stream Rings; zooplankton associated with deep-sea hydrothermal vents; acoustical determination of zooplankton biomass, abundance, and size; ecosystem dynamics on Georges Bank/Gulf of Maine and the Western Antarctic Continental Shelf.  Peter's taxonomic specialty is the euphausiids, or krill.  He is also a pro at running the MOCNESS systems which he invented.

CMarZ Steering Group member. The focus of Russ' graduate research was on plankton ecology in the tropical waters surrounding Jamaica, West Indies. From 1997 to 1999, Dr, Hopcroft was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). At MBARI he became heavily involved in the use of ROVs, as well as traditional oceanographic surveys, to study the oceans. Since 2000, his research has concentrated on the Arctic and subarctic waters surrounding Alaska. He is increasing recognized for his images of zooplankton, as well as his taxonomic expertise on larvaceans (a group of pelagic tunicates). Visit his web site.

Francesc received his doctoral degree Biology (Ecology) from the University of Barcelona (1991). Subsequently, he had postdoctoral appointments at the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar Biology in Bremerhaven; Germany and the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory, University of Kyoto, Japan. He is currently a Regular Scientist at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Barcelona, Spain. Francesc is a world-renowned expert on the ecology and taxonomy of gelatinous mesozooplankton, especially siphonophores, ctenophores and medusae, in shallow and deep-water environments. He has extensive sea-going research experience in the Benguela Current off Western Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, the Humboldt Current of Peru, and the Weddell Sea of the Southern Ocean. His interests include: spatio-temporal distributions of gelatinous fauna in relation to water masses and physical factors; trophodynamics and predatory impact of planktonic cnidarians on other zooplankton populations; and symbiotic associations involving gelatinous zooplankton. He is looking forward to catching jellies from depths greater than 1000m on this cruise.

(WHOI), USA is our data manager on the cruise.  She makes sure all information having to do with the sampling is recorded and will be responsible for getting it served on the internet for general use.  If she could, she would do a Vulcan mind-meld with every  scientist on board in order to learn about absolutely everything.

Biology teacher at Billings West High School in Billings, Montana, Joe is joining the project as an ARMADA Teacher.  His most recent experiences as a teacher in the science process have been a study of gastropod diversity and abundance in Lake Tanganyika, through the Nyanza Project, and a study of the effects of immunocontraceptives on ground squirrels, through the M.J. Murdock Partners in Science Program, and The Zoo Montana Conservation Center.  In 2005, Joe received a Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Abroad award.   He was a group leader for a diverse group of teachers studying the education system in Japan .

Research Associate at Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst.  Nancy is interested in zooplankton taxonomy, especially Calanoid copepods and euphausiids.  She also does the web updates for the Census of Marine Zooplankton and is the contact person for outreach and education.

Erich's research interests include the biology of oceanic zooplankton; distribution, morphological adaptation, and ecology of mesopelagic communities; sampling techniques/systems for zooplankton research; laboratory culture of marine invertebrates for research purposes.  Erich knows the taxonomy of many zooplankton groups and is also a MOCNESS expert.

 Univ. of Connecticut - Avery Point, USA.  Rob is the CMarZ-N. American post-doctorate and  is 'team DNA' leader.  He is leading the charge on at-sea genetic sequencing, something never before accomplished.  His research interests include population genetics of marine zooplankton, especially euphausiids, and environmentally driven evolution of Meganyctiphanes norvegica, a large krill species.  His past work involved phylogeography of northwest Atlantic benthic polychaetes (worms).

Research Interests
The general ecology of oceanic plankton with special emphasis on the ecology, taxonomy and zoogeography of halocyprid ostracods - particularly the abyssal and benthopelgic species.  Martin is one of four remaining experts on ostracods and would love to pass on his knowledge to interested students.

Tracey's research interests include pelagic biodiversity, biocomplexity, and ecology, with emphasis on biophysical coupling across multiple trophic levels; Fish community and population ecology, with emphasis on trophic interactions, systematics, phylogenetics and zoogeography; Zooplankton/phytoplankton interactions; Zooplankton ecology, with emphasis on small-scale community structural dynamics; In situ biological sampling instrumentation, with emphasis on multi-mode exploration of poorly known deep-sea habitats.

Yurika Ujiie

 - University of Geneva , Switzerland.  Yurika is looking at the foraminifera.  Her background is in paleo-oceanography but is now working on the biogeography of living forms using both morphologic and molecular techniques.

Leo is a graduate student at the Universidad de Oviedo, Spain. His specialty is calanoid copepods.  He is interested in both their taxonomy and the population dynamics of Clausocalanus using both morphology and genetic methods .

Barbara is a Ph. D. student at the Univeristy of Connecticut studying microzooplankton, especially tintinnids and other ciliates, their ecology and biodiversity via morphologic and genetic methods.  She is also experienced with the CTD and is in charge of this aspect of the cruise.

Team DNA member.  Brian is a Ph.D. student at the University of Connecticut under the direction of Dr. Ann Bucklin. Brian received his Bachelor of Science degree (Marine Biology) in 2000 and a Master of Science (Biological Sciences) in 2003 from the University of Southern Mississippi. Currently his research pursuits are two-fold. First, he is looking for molecular characters that can be used to identify gelatinous zooplankton at the species level. Secondly, he plans to apply population genetic techniques to study interrelationships between gelatinous zooplankton populations in order to determine the causes and consequences of episodic blooms of these fauna.

Ebru is a PhD student in Department of Marine Sciences in University of Connecticut under the supervision of Prof. Ann Bucklin. Her research interests include the population genetic diversity and structure of Calanus finmarchicus (Copepoda, Calanoida) in the North Atlantic in both temporal and spatial scales. She is currently working on developing population genetic markers that would resolve the basin-scale distribution of C. finmarchicus, as well as to assess the possible temporal genetic variation in response to regime and climate changes.  She is a member of 'Team DNA' and is interested in furthering her knowledge of copepod taxonomy.
